It can feel overwhelming trying to narrow down the right interior designer for you. To help make the process a little easier, we put together a list of things to consider when meeting with prospective interior designers.
1. The designer should ask good questions to get a good sense of your stye and how you will use the space. Tip: Showing the designer pictures of what you like is the best way for him/her to get a sense of your style.
2. It’s important to make sure you feel comfortable with the designer’s personality as you will be spending a lot of time together. Making sure your personalities are compatible will be the key to problem solving and decision making.
3. Ask about their fee structure. Different designers charge differently – some charge a mark up on materials, others may do a percentage of the total project and some provide a flat fee or charge an hourly rate. Something to consider is that if you, as the client, want to do some of the process for yourselves, the flat fee or hourly rate may be most appropriate.
4. Check if the designer has done the type of project that you are looking for to see if they have experience with your type of project.
5. Have a budget in mind. This helps the designer guide you on product selections, realistic exceptions, and alternatives that fit into your budget. Feel free to ask the designer what they think is a reasonable budget for the project. They should be able to give at least a ballpark number/range.
6. Have your wishlist if budget and money wasn’t an issue and your top priorities. Sometimes, as homeowners, it’s possible to think something is not in the budget or that there isn’t space, but designers can work their magic and make some things work. So make sure you mention your desires.
7. Let the designer help you find contractors, if you don’t have a contractor you love to work with, see if your designer has recommendations.
8. And lastly, as with the selection of any professional consultant, ask for referrals!
