This can tell you if your contractor has a lot of experience with your type of project.

2.  What do you subcontract?

What parts of the job do they hire out to other people?  This lets you know if your contractor is doing all of the work him/herself or if they have a large team working with them.

3.  Who manages the project and how do you handle scheduling?

This will give you a sense of how organized the contractor is.

4.  Who purchases the materials?

It’s typical for the contractor to mark-up prices to cover their liability and time if they are purchasing the materials on your behalf.

5.  What is your lead time to start this project?

6.  What kind of insurance do you carry?

It’s important that your contractor is licensed in your state and carries sufficient insurance for your project.

7.  What can we do to make the job go more smoothly?

As the homeowner, there are things you can do to make their job easier.  This can give you a sense of how collaborative their process is.

8.  Could you give us some references from people who have had similar types of projects?
