Last week we showed you the transformation of a New York Times Bestselling Author’s unused loft space into the office of her dreams. But what happened to her makeshift office in the entryway? If you recall, books were a big influence on this project and this powerhouse finance executive, wife, and mother wanted a home library of her own.
On the library wishlist was a cozy place to read. Immediately we thought to incorporate a window seat. To achieve this, we framed out the existing window with columns and built out a cushioned bench. Niches on each side of the bench were built into the columns, creating a place to display memorabilia or favorite books. The grass cloth window treatments bring in the coastal feel of the Cape Cod inspired home.
Storage was another necessity in this home library. To maximize storage, we incorporated floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall cabinetry. This gave plenty of room to showcase all of their books. Bead board on the back of the cabinets relfect the Cape Cod aesthetics. Another place we added storage was under the window seat itself. Drawers allowed for storage to conceal items that they may not want to display.
Even though the home owners wanted a Cape Cod coastal home, a lot of this Author’s books take place in Paris, so we decided to bring in some French flare with a Louis style arm chair and a French side table. Upholstered in an orange fabric, this chair adds a pop of a bright and happy color when your first enter the home.
One of our favorite touches in this design was the repurposed dresser. We were just about to order a piece for the entry when Michelle noticed the home owners were going to get rid of one of their daughter’s dresser. She knew right away that this piece would fit perfectly by the door so we had the dresser repainted to give it new life and a new atheistic.
These homeowners now have two spaces they use and love: their new office loft and new library off the entry. We took this family’s passion and turned these catch-all spaces into rooms that now have a specific purpose. We are so happy we were able to be apart of these transformations and be able to turn these unused spaces into functional rooms.
